Worried students are using Kingston University’s career service more this year, as fears for job prospects grow.

The service has seen an increase in inquiries from students anxious about how to prepare themselves for the current job market.

The university’s most recent figures showed 1,474 students had requested basic information and advice since September 2008.

Tonia Galati, employability co-ordinator at the university, said: “Students seem to be aware that not only are there fewer jobs but there is also much more competition as employers can afford to be more selective.

“We have been trying to increase their awareness of how all sectors and roles will be affected by the credit crunch.”

Students have the chance to better their chances by practising interview skills and getting feedback on how to improve their techniques at events held by the university.

Local employers are also working closely with the university to arrange work experience for the undergraduates.

A number of Kingston graduates have contacted the careers service wanting to find jobs more aligned to their career aspirations and degree achievement.

A university spokesman said: “I think students are definitely taking advantage of the support available from the careers service in terms of helping them plan their career path and providing them with information about what employers are looking for.”
