Enforcement officers have just won their eighth conviction in the past few months as they fight to stop fly-tipping in the borough.

Nick Pettengell, 38, of Amity Grove, Raynes Park, was fined £400 and ordered to pay £415 costs by Croydon Magistrates Court on September 11 after a van owned by him was seen being used to dump barrels at Mill Green Flats in November 2010.

Mr Pettengell was cleared of fly-tipping, but convicted of failing to provide Sutton Council with details of the driver of the vehicle.

Deputy Leader of Sutton Council, Councillor Colin Hall, said: "Fly-tips are an eyesore that affect the quality of life for our residents and give a poor impression to visitors.

"Our enforcement officers work hard to ensure that every case is investigated and perpetrators are prosecuted."

Previous cases include Stephen McNern, 22, of Cavendish Road, Sutton, who was found guilty of dumping builder’s rubble at Endeavour Way, Beddington on 30 August 2011. He was fined and ordered to pay £415 costs by Croydon magistrates on July 17.

Lazaro Cassar, of Lindburgh Road, Wallington, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £350 costs after rubbish was dumped in Watermead Lane, Carshalton in September 2011.

Seamus Heywood and Sarah Connolly, the landlords of the Winning Post public house in Sutton, were fined £750 each on 7 July plus costs of £408 after being found guilty of failing in their waste duty of care when waste from the Winning Post pub was put into the council’s commercial waste system without a contract.
