Sutton’s most exceptional people have been recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s honours list.
The list recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom and this year’s list includes six people from Sutton.
Dr Ian Birnbaum, Sutton Council’s former director of education has become an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services to local government.
Amin Mawji was also made an OBE for his public and voluntary service.
Mrs Marilyn Gordon-Jones has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for her services to Sutton’s Old People Welfare Committee.
Mrs Gordon-Jones has volunteered for around 40 years and cooks food for the elderly every Thursday.
Alan Woodwiss has become an MBE for his services to amateur football. In the mid 1950s he set up Sutton High Football Club and has been involved ever since.
Other honours include William Nicholls, who has been made an MBE for his voluntary service to the Sainsbury’s Veterans’ Association and Kevin Whelan who was also made an MBE for his work as a messenger for the HM Treasury.
