Plants in controversial Sutton High Street green wall die

Contractors replacing the plants in Sutton earlier this week Contractors replacing the plants in Sutton earlier this week

Plants in Sutton's controversial green wall have died, just weeks after it was unveiled.

The plants had to be replaced because they were not adapting to living in the wall of foliage set across the Wilkinsons building in Trinity Square.

Councillor Jayne McCoy, the councillor responsible for the High Street redvelopment, said: "Our contractors have replaced a few plants which weren’t growing very well following an inspection this week.

"As any good gardener knows, there’ll always be a few plants that don’t thrive when they first go in, so this replacement work and regular maintenance is included in the contract at no extra cost to the taxpayer.

"The rest of the wall is thriving and we’ve had some really positive feedback from residents, shoppers and traders who say who much it has brightened up the town centre."

The wall, the final major part of the Sutton High Street redevelopment, caused controversy after it was revealed it cost £151,000.

As any good gardener knows, Ms McCoy, it’s a stupid idea thought up by stupid people. I thought you’d already spent £3.2 million making the High Street look brighter?

I'm sure the elderly people and people with disabilities who have had their services cut are delighted with it. At least it's tax payers money that didn't go into the pockets of useless councillors.

...and I’m sure the sudden rush in people voting for the wall being liked hasn’t come from within the Council or its LibDem friends...

It's nothing to do with the fact that plants should be in the ground and not on a wall!
It will be interesting to see how the wall reacts to the winter weather!
These numptys at the council should give the money to improve the public sector rather than a stupid wall which no one wants
While I am having a moan, why not finish the high street anyway! There are no gates at all, just some crappy metal barriers bent to bits after the drunken yobs leaving revolutions have bounced all over them!
And that's another thing, why is the council letting that his forsaken club get away with turning Sutton back to what it was, fight night! I watched in horror as drunken yobs beat hell out of each other! And what are the council doing about ut???? Probably start laying turf on the bloody roads!!!! A disgrace

A huge waste of money when we have families with kids homeless in this borough and in horrible temp housing. Get a grip Sutton council, you are a disgrace. Priorities aren't your specialty. There are literaly hundreds of other causes and needs in this borough and plants and pavements aren't 2 of them. It's so easy to spend our money---JERKS!

I told you so from the moment this crazy idea was fired in a McCoy brain neuron. Godammit what is the point of the grass wall? How about inviting BBC Gardeners Question Time to Sutton for a special edition of Up the Wall Gardening at the tax payers expense of course? All the previous reports I have read put the cost at £145K now above it says £151K rising like all the other LBS project costs. However I have to concede that the teflon-coated looney ideas people will be voted back in again next election with an increased majority. It's the reality of the strange Sutton Effect.

We now read that LBS are going around with the begging bowl to local businesses for money to improve the High Street!

It is an absolute disgrace that public money was spent on this. Costs will be ongoing as they will have to pay for the upkeep of it. This is what you get when "career politicians" are in control - they have no professional skills, no real job experience and no clue about how public services really operate.

These people should be made to work in the Private Sector and we will have then unemployed within a week !!!!
Why do people vote Lib Dem it is one of the mysteries of life. They waste our money and both local MP's are a waste of space - one more than the other !!!!!

I'd like to know how many of the Don't Cares in the above poll don't have to pay council tax and so aren't affected financially by the Wall Street Grass.

I think part of the problem is that it's too small. It looks lost, and the 'welcome to wilkos' sign slap bang in the middle of it diminishes it further. If it was extended down the high street, it may have a greater impact.

Come on councillors, don't lose your nerve now!

I have come to the conclusion that Sutton must have a high proportion of people of below average intelligence to keep voting these Muppets into power.

What on earth is going on at Sutton Council????? As if the whole high st fiasco wasn't enough I hear they are also talking about collecting our bins at night!!!!!!!!
Its time to get the well-paid spin doctors from Westminster out of our town hall and to bring in some common sense.
Someone also told me that they are not going to put the cycle lanes back in the high street. It beggars belief!!!!!

Geat news if they do not put the cycles lanes back!!!! Then we can walk about in safety without some nutter shouting or wringing their bell at you.
It is a pedestrianised area not a cycle track

I love the green wall. I think it's worth well over £1m. They should extend it all down the beautiful High Street and nourish it with the tears of angry Sutton residents.

Charles Edwards says...

Fair enough if you don't like cyclists, I know there are some bad ones about, just like there are lots of bad drivers. Not having lanes won't stop people riding down the high street and past this £1.5 million vertical flower bed, though!!!
And what about the night time rubbish rounds?

I think the green wall is gorgeous. I'm going to make velcro shoes so I can prance about in it and spit on cyclists because cyclists are smug and dangerous. But mainly smug.

If you walk in area marked "cycle lane" would you not expect to have a cyclist either shout at you or ringing their bell at you?

It seems care in the community isn't working.

Oh dear SollyAtwell we have touched a nerve - only a loony Council like the one we have, would mix pedestrians and cyclists in the same area. After all it is illegal to cycle on the pavement - is the High Street not a form of pavement.Your comment about Care in the Community perhaps says more about you?????

Islington council installed a similar green wall - at substantial cost. It too failed. Pity local authorities don't liaise with one another before wasting their residents' money. Better by far to protect and enhance already existing spaces, and stop chopping down trees at the behest of insurers, than spray money on cosmetic features such as this. NB roof gardens appear much more successful.
