Firefighters are preparing for the worst bonfire night for five years.

London Fire Brigade's Borough Commander for Sutton has warned it is first bonfire night to fall on a weekend since 2006.

Last time there was a weekend bonfire night, the amount of fires doubled.

The brigade is urging people to attend their local fireworks display rather than setting their own off at home.

Aaron Watson, London Fire Brigade’s Borough Commander for Sutton, said: "A trip to hospital or a wrecked property will certainly make you remember the fifth of November, but for all the wrong reasons."

"It's safer to attend an organised event but if you are having your own celebration take these simple precautions - never play with fireworks, only let adults handle fireworks and when you’re watching them - stand well back. Finally, never go near a firework that’s been lit, even if it’s not gone off."

Police will be stepping up patrols in the area and parks will be closed and bins emptied on time.
