The Institute of Cancer Research has celebrated 10 years of its drug development unit.

The lecture theatre at the unit in Cotswold Road was filled to the rafters as patients, their advocates, health care professionals, clinicians and researchers gathered for talks from the institute's director and chief nurse to mark the anniversary.

Professor Johann de Bono, the unit’s director, said: “We’re living in a very exciting time in cancer research and, in many ways, we’ve never had it so good with respect to the huge volume of information we now have on cancers.”

He also shared his gratitude for the “superb” team of people who work in the unit and the funders who support it – including the ICR and Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, Cancer Research UK, the National Institute for Health Research, the Department of Health, and the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre.

Three patients who had attended treatment in the Oak Ward in the Drug Development Unit (DDU) also spoke about their experiences in the unit’s trials, expressing their gratitude towards its staff and researchers, at the meeting on May 6.
