A 76-year-old grandmother will launch herself from a plane at 10,000 feet to help St Raphael’s Hospice.

Laura Oram, of Christchurch Park, Sutton, has raised more than £2,000 from sponsors, and hopes more money will fly in before she takes the two-mile leap over Salisbury Plain.

Ms Oram, a cancer survivor, has previously helped to raise funds for charity by walking on hot coals, but has decided to take things to a higher level for her latest sponsored event.

Asked if she had any previous skydiving experience, she said: “No, I don’t even like heights.”

Grandson Adam Diamond-Smith, 29, will accompany her for the plunge tomorrow, when the two first-timers will be harnessed to professionals from Goskydive, a diving centre based at Old Sarum Airfield.

Granddaughter Carly Diamond helped out by setting up a JustGiving page for the event. Ms Oram found out she had breast cancer at the age of 42, and has been left with lymphedema in her right arm.

She is keen to help St Raphael’s, based in London Road, North Cheam, as it relies heavily on donations for support.

Ms Oram and her husband of 53 years, Jim Diamond, 79, also support Sutton’s Talking Newspaper, which provides blind and partially sighted residents with recordings of national magazines.
