Traffic is still being diverted in St Nicholas Way in Sutton town centre this morning, after part of the road caved in yesterday afternoon.
The damage is a result of a suspected sewer collapse.
It appears the busy route through town will be shut off for the rest of the day, with Thames Water reporting they are most likely to carry out a survey overnight.
Traffic is now being diverted down West Street, just as motorists approach the area near the St Nicholas Centre and Asda.
The top of the road at the junction with Cheam Road has now be reopened, following its closure at around 2pm yesterday afternoon.
The road is closed just outside the St Nicholas Centre
The diversion caused traffic delays and lengthy journeys home for motorists and bus commuters.
A Thames Water Spokesperson said: “Our engineers inspected the road last night, and while we can’t see any outward signs of damage to our sewer, we’ll be putting a camera down to check for problems that might be present underground”
“We’re currently sorting out when the survey will take place.
"It is carried out at night as the flows in the sewer are less. “
