Soul diva Jocelyn Brown is performing two rare "Unplugged" accoustic shows on 10th and 11th January at Hideaway in Streatham.

Jocelyn Brown is best known for soul classics “Somebody Else’s Guy”, “Always There”, “Black Gold of the Sun” with NuYorican Soul and she will be joined on stage by members of the All Star Collective.

These two special shows at south London's Hideaway jazz club will not only celebrate the power, personality and soul Jocelyn is renowned for, but also showcases the sweeter more delicate side of this legendary singer as she selects a range of standards and classics that have influenced her life as well as delving into her own amazing song book.

She will be performing for an hour and a half with a five-piece full band but has scaled back the production with more of an "Unplugged" style for this more intimate venue.

Born in North Carolina, Jocelyn was raised in Kinston with her grandmother before moving to New York. Singing played a big part in her family life, but it was her aunt Barbara Roy, who sang with female vocal group EPP that inspired her to sing seriously.

She began her career singing with groups like Kleeer, Machine, Disco Tex & The Sex-O-Lettes and Change. Then she became the lead vocalist for the project Inner Life in 1979, releasing hits like “Ain't No Mountain High Enough”, “Moment Of My Life”, “I Like It Like That” and “Make It Last Forever”.

During the 1980s she kept on contributing to disco and soul projects such as Chic (Soup For One), George Benson (“Give Me The Night”), Bernard Edwards, Candido (“Jingo”), Manu Dibango (“Soul Mokassa LP”), Culture Club and Janis Ian. She has also provided backing vocals for Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Roberta Flack, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Tom Jones, Diana Ross, Patti Austin, Bette Midler, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry, Billy Idol and Steve Winwood.

In 1984 she wrote her massive hit “Somebody Else's Guy” together with her sister, Annette Brown and which was re-released it in 1998.

Later in the 1980s she worked with Jellybean on many singles such as “Love's Gonna Get You”. Afterwards she discovered that her voice had been sampled from this song in Snap's song The Power, sadly she was never credited or acknowledged for the use of the sample.

Jocelyn continued to collaborate with various dance artists and projects, most notably a duo with her friend Kym Mazelle (“No More Tears”), Incognito's “Always There” which reached no. 6 in the UK charts in 1991 and Masters At Work in both M.A.W. records (such as Can't Stop The Rhythm in 1993) and in their NuYorican Soul project.
