More than 50 green campaigners including Zac Goldsmith and Sir David Attenborough have called for a plastic bag free Olympics.
They signed a letter to the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Thursday, July 26, warning of the danger of throwaway plastics.
Mr Goldsmith, Richmond Park MP and co-patron of the Greener upon Thames group, said: “Plastic bags cause immense damage throughout the world and absolutely symbolise the mindlessness of our throwaway society.
“Visitors to the Olympics have an opportunity to show that life without throwaway bags is perfectly possible.”
Roz Savage, of Greener upon Thames, said: “The Olympics provide an inspiring reminder of what is possible when human beings strive to reach the peak of their potential.
“Let’s all strive to raise our game environmentally and stop using plastic bags right now.”
