A group of artists have contributed a collection of their work to a hospital for patients and staff to enjoy.

Richmond Arts Service, at Orleans House Gallery, compiled a varied portfolio of nearly 30 paintings, graphic designs, historic photographs and prints for Teddington Memorial Hospital, in Hampton Road.

Patients, volunteers and staff at the hospital worked closely with Richmond Arts Service to organise the special exhibition.

Artist Tom Nowell contributed a striking acetate design called the English Herb Garden.

He said: “First and foremost, the feeling I wanted the piece to give off was one of positivity, so themes of ‘summer’ and ‘meadows’ figure prominently in the design.

“But I also wanted the piece to tie in with what actually happens at hospital, so I came up with the idea of using medicinal herbs as the main subject to represent the healing process.”

Another artist Jill Storey added: “Much of the artwork on display at the hospital is of local scenes that will be familiar to people from round here, so visitors can really relate to the views as they are places they will know well and will have been to.”

Betsy Lewis-Holmes, of the arts service at Orleans House Gallery, said: “Orleans House Gallery has been a long standing supporter of Art and Soul, a member-led organisation that celebrates mental and emotional wellbeing through the arts, so we were keen to get involved in partnership with the local NHS.

“Clinical research published in 2004 by the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital has shown that the placement of original works of art within healthcare environments provides a reduction of anxiety, stress and depression for patients, staff and visitors.”

Linden Loader, of the art project team at Teddington Memorial Hospital, said: “There’s been such a positive response and so much enthusiasm from patients and staff to the artwork.” Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust’s charitable fund paid for the exhibition.

Visitors will be able to see the artwork on display in many different parts of the hospital, including the outpatients waiting area, the day room and the upstairs rehabilitation corridor.
