A wheelchair-user repeatedly denied access to buses has been told she cannot attend a meeting between the council and transport commissioner Peter Hendy.

Clare Watson, 21, of Portman Avenue, East Sheen, had hoped she would be able to speak to Mr Hendy face-to-face when he visits the borough to talk about transport issues.

However she was left disappointed this week when she was told she would not be allowed to attend.

She said: "Obviously I'm a bit disappointed that I’m not allowed to go.

“I hope they address the problem. They have to realise it is very serious and the fact it continues to happen is obviously upsetting for me.”

Miss Watson has told of her daily battle to use public transport after a series of incidents where she was left behind at bus stops as drivers drove by, told bus ramps were not working, or told there was no room as there were buggies on board.

Last month Miss Watson met senior transport official Ken Davidson to discuss the problem, but had hoped she could address the issue with Transport for London's (TfL) boss.

A spokesman for Richmond Council confirmed officers would be meeting the commissioner but said the original appointment, scheduled for today, had been postponed and when it went ahead Miss Watson would not be able to attend.

He said: “Unfortunately due to an extremely tight agenda it will not be possible for Clare Watson to attend.”

He said they would ensure Mr Hendy was made aware of the problems Miss Watson had encountered.

Although Miss Watson will not meet the commissioner, London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon is to put a question to London Mayor Boris Johnson next week about the problems she faces.

Ms Pidgeon will ask the London Mayor on Monday what response, if any, he will provide to the Richmond and Twickenham Times about our call for him to meet with disabled transport users in the borough.

Miss Watson said: "I'm hoping it will make a difference. The problem is not so much about technology or access, but the attitude of some drivers."
