Partially sighted paddler Alexis Gohar picked up a special award for displaying courage and fortitude in the Devizes to Westminster Canoe Marathon.

Alexis, who belongs to Richmond Canoe Club, has suffered a considerable loss of sight - nil in one eye and 30 per cent in the other - as a result of a brain tumour which was operated on several years ago.

The Sir Louis and Lady Gluckstein Trophy is in recognition of Alexis taking on the hardest canoe challenge in the country. Not content with setting out to complete the 125-mile course, Alexis decided to do the Easter weekend race over four days.

Richmond head coach Trevor Wetherall said: "I was proud and honoured to support Alexis throughout the race. He did not complain, but just got on with the task he had set himself."

Richmond's Piran Shelley picked up the Challenge Cup for winning the overall race, Richmond's Sean Martin, Alexis Gohar and Antony Nercessian taking the Singles Team Trophy.
