A teenager has denied being involved in violence between rival football fans during Crystal Palace's game against Charlton in September.

James Archie Clark, 18, of Corner Green in Greenwich, is charged with using threatening behaviour to provoke or cause fear of violence close to Selhurst Park on September 23.

Mr Clark, a Charlton fan, pleaded not guilty today at Croydon Magistrates' Court today and will face trial at the same court on May 11, 2016.

At least 12 people have been arrested in connection with disorder that broke out between fans during Crystal Palace’s 4-1 victory against their south London rivals.

Since his arrest Mr Clark had been under bail conditions that prevented him from going to any football matches.

But his solicitor Steven Evans applied to have this condition lifted, on the grounds that it had “severely impacted” on his client’s social life.

Mr Evans said: “He was a young man of 17 when this allegedly took place. His social life is football, and he’s a young man – that’s what young men do.

“He has since this offence been prevented from going to any football matches, which has severely impacted on his social life. He’s now looking at missing the whole Christmas period, which is the most exciting time for any football fan.

“With the trial being fixed for May, he’s going to miss out on the entire season, and that’s going to impact highly on his social life.”

Mr Clark was released on unconditional bail until his trial date.

Earlier in the same courtroom, a hearing was adjourned for two teenage boys accused of running onto the pitch at Selhurst Park during the Eagle’s 1-0 defeat to Sunderland on November 23.

Archie Jones, 18, from Richmond, and the 17-year-old will appear again at the court on January 21.
