Dogs, cats and guinea pigs will receive more protection thanks to Richmond Council’s new animal champion.
All London boroughs have been encouraged by the RSPCA to nominate a councillor for the role and Councillor Petra Sale will take on the title.
She will receive training from the charity, working with pets and their owners throughout Richmond to deal with all animal-related issues.
Coun Sale said: "We all want the best care for our pets, we want to ensure that they are treated properly and have clean and decent living conditions.
"It is not always easy to know where to get advice so I will work with the RSPCA to produce a comprehensive guide.
"I am also keen to work with vets and animal welfare organisations to make sure children know where to find advice."
