RNLI crew regularly launch their lifeboats into the River Thames to rescue those in danger, but a 24-hour row-a-thon on dry land is a first.
Unperturbed, crews from Chiswick and Teddington stations, which serve the Kingston stretch, will take up the challenge from noon on Friday, January 29.
They will use rowing machines on loan for the weekend and will take it in turns to row continuously for a whole day and night, in a bid to raise funds for the RNLI’s SOS Day.
British Olympic gold medal rower Greg Searle, who is shaping up for the London 2012 Olympics, will kick off the event with a stint in the hot seat.
A spokesman said: “The crew from the lifeboat station hope their efforts will encourage you to show your support throughout the adventure, and possibly inspire you to follow suit and organise or take part in a fundraising event for the RNLI.”
