A nature reserve, a recreation ground and three parks in Epsom have been recognised as some of the best green spaces in Britain.

The Green Flag Award scheme announced today that Epsom Common has been given the special status for the ninth year running.

Alexandra Recreation Ground, Ewell Court Park and Nonsuch Park gained the status for the fourth year and Rosebery Park got the award for the third time.

Jan Mason, chairman of the leisure committee at Epsom Council, said: "The borough has fantastic parks and green spaces and a Green Flag flying overhead is a sign that the space boasts the highest possible standards and is beautifully maintained.

"These awards are a great endorsement of the work of council staff and the army of local volunteers, who work all year round, rain and shine, to make these green spaces attractive and accessible to the local residents, both human and wildlife".

The Green Flag Awards are judged by 700 green space experts on strict criteria including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
