Residents are still fighting for action to prevent another tragedy on a "dangerous" road where a mother and son died in a head-on collision.

In the wake of the fatal crash, a petition calling for a speed camera in Banstead Road, Ewell, has been signed by 1,670 people and submitted to the council.

Last month an inquest was held into the accidental death of Nicola Morris, 29, and her son Kai Arnold, 11, at about 10.30am on Saturday, July 5.

In the summer Ms Morris’ former colleague Kathryn McCourt, 25, started a petition to make the road safer to ensure "another tragic accident like this never happens again".

Your Local Guardian:

After the inquest, which included very little information about the road itself, she said: "It is very upsetting that the road itself wasn't bought into account.

"We collected enough signatures for it to go to council, I am currently awaiting hearing back from them.

"I believe it is a long and lengthy process but we will all still fight to ensure that a speed camera is put there.

"The road itself is so dangerous I myself and others don't even want to drive down that road as it is so unsafe.

"I have in fact seen police cars and camera vans parked on the side of the road near there but something permanent needs to be done for others safety."

A Surrey County Council spokesman said: "We are always looking at ways in which we can make Surrey's roads as safe as possible and now we have received the petition, this will be discussed at the next appropriate local committee meeting."

It may be discussed at the Epsom and Ewell Local Committee meeting at Bourne Hall, in Spring Street, Ewell, on Monday, March 9, at 7pm.
