A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after several cars and lorries crashed on the M25 this morning.

The accident, which involved two lorries and five cars, happened between junctions 9, Leatherhead, and 8, Reigate, at 8.10am. 

A man in his 30s, the driver of a Toyota Yaris, was flown to St George's Hospital, in Tooting, after being cut free from his car by firefighters.

The other vehicles involved in the collision were two HGVs, a Vauxhall Vivaro van, a Volkswagen Fox, a white Astra van, and a Volkswagen Golf. 

The driver of the Vivaro van was taken to St George's Hospital by road. 

It is not believed that anyone else was injured.

The clockwise carriageway has now been reopened but the anti-clockwise carriageway still remains closed while emergency crews deal with the accident. 

Police officers are urging members of the public to remain in their vehicles for their own safety.
