The Secretary of State joined those in Weybridge to bow his head in solemn prayer and remember the sacrifices of those at war.

Philip Hammond MP attended a Remembrance Sunday ceremony at Weybridge’s war memorial with the mayor of Elmbridge Councillor John Sheldon.

The pair joined scouts and veterans to lay wreaths at the base of the memorial, while Elmbridge’s other MP Dominic Raab attended the Walton service and made a reading at St Mary’s Church.

Mr Raab said: “It is only fitting that we pay tribute to our armed forces, bearing in mind their Herculean achievements and sacrifices.

“Communities across Elmbridge always commemorate the occasion with great dignity and respect.”

Memorials, wreath-layings and processions took place in 16 locations across the borough, with impressive turnouts of people remembering those the country has lost, and those who continue to risk their lives in battle.

Coun Sheldon said: “There has never been a time when we did not depend on brave men and women willing to risk their lives in the defence of our nation.

“Those in action deserve our gratitude, respect, and support. Those who have died will be remembered for ever.”

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the poppy appeal. Last year the Surrey appeal raised £1,045,000.
