Two exceptionally rare electric cars from 110 years ago are being auctioned by Brooklands Museum in Weybridge for up to £40,000.

The 1906 Pope Waverley Victoria Phaeton and the 1907 Victor High Wheel Electric Runabout are a pair of Edwardian vehicles being offered for auction this weekend.

They were created when the Brooklands motor racing circuit was under construction.

The US-built pair will both be offered in the price range of £30,000 and £40,000 at the auction on Saturday, June 11, and were originally sold for about $1,600.

A Brooklands spokesman said: “There were over 100 manufacturers of battery-powered cars in the early 20th century.

“It was only advances in the internal combustion engine and the mass production of cheaper petrol vehicles that sounded the death knell of the electric car movement.”

Both cars are now equipped with modern batteries and a charging system for a useable range.
