Hersham Green shopping centre could be set for further development after being put on the market for more than £15m.

Shoppers could see more stores brought in to the 3.8 acre village site, which is up for sale for £15.29m, and currently has a Waitrose supermarket, 15 shop units and a 223-space car park, as well as offices.

The Waitrose in the centre is said to be the best-performing in the area, ahead of Weybridge and Esher, according to Hersham North Councillor Mary Sheldon.

Waitrose also has a nine-year lease on the site, until 2025.

Potential new retail outlets will be joined by budget supermarket Lidl, which will be based in the Riverdene Business Park in Molesey Road after it was approved in July.

The development will also include 38 houses.

Coun Sheldon said: “It should be good for Hersham if the new owners are going to be prepared to refurbish and reinvest in our well-loved centre.”

She added there had been discussions in the past to redevelop the site to include more housing, but said the centre had been on the market for several years, even before she became a councillor in 2006.

An Elmbridge Council spokeswoman said: “We have noted the centre is on the market and hope there will be strong interest by investors who appreciate Hersham is a thriving centre with plenty to offer. “Any prospective purchaser might also wish to hear that the council is continuing to show its support for Hersham through the Elmbridge Civic Improvement Fund (ECIF) which has supported numerous village businesses and initiatives including Hersham in Bloom, Okeechobees cafe and most recently Sparkle with Beauty.

“ECIF was established by the council in 2009 to support local businesses and improve the business environment and to enhance the borough’s villages and town centres.”
