Disgruntled people have set up a petition urging Surrey County Council to put in the valuable toilet facilities they were promised.

Since starting the petition on Sunday, June 7, 376 people have signed in support of the goal.

It states: "The beautiful new bridge has been completed and looks stunning however the riverside amenities which were to include new cafe and toilet block are still be completed and the landscaping areas are deteriorating due to lack of maintenance."

Temporary toilet facilities were installed last year but were removed in March.

The petition said: "This has clearly affected the cafe and boat trip business that operate from Cowey Sale and more importantly left the people who do still visit the area without any facilities."

Kevin Guiness, from Walton, wrote on the petition: "The bridge towpath and cafe are a major attraction in Walton, we must have full facilities as we did before."

Liz Nichols, from Walton, said: "A cafe brings life to the area and creates a hub for people to socialise. Young and old would all benefit from this essential addition to the riverside."

The £32m project was completed in July 2013, replacing two temporary bridges. It was first thought up in 2004 by Surrey County Council, and since completion has been awarded the best practice award at the British Construction Industry awards in October.

A county council spokesman said: "We welcome petitions as a way of residents to tell us what matters to them and our contractor is currently looking into this following discussions between us and Elmbridge Council."
