The company that wants to build a major incinerator in Beddington has announced its programme of community consultation on its plans.

Waste company Viridor has revealed details of the facility on its landfill and waste management site in Beddington Lane, which will create energy from burning 275,000 tonnes of waste each year.

The £200m project, which will handle not only waste from Sutton, Croydon, Kingston, and Merton, but also large amounts of business waste.

By burning non-recyclable waste to create steam to power turbines, the incinerator is expected to produce about 30 megawatts of electricity and heat energy, estimated to be enough to power 30,000 homes.

In order to build and operate the facility, Viridor is preparing a planning application for submission to the London Borough of Sutton, as the local planning authority, in mid-June.

An application to the Environment Agency for an Environmental Permit will also be made at this time.

As part of the development of the planning application, Viridor is now embarking on a programme of community consultation allow people living and working close to the site, as well as the wider community across the four partner boroughs, to have the opportunity to learn more about the company’s proposals, ask questions and importantly provide feedback on the plans.

Over 50,000 newsletters will be sent out to residents and businesses located close to the site with information about the proposed scheme and how to engage in the consultation process, including a freephone information line 0800 298 7040 and details of the brand new online engagement hub at viridor.co.uk/beddington-erf.

Public exhibitions are also being held between 3pm and 7pm on:

• Tuesday 20 March at Holiday Inn, Gibson Road, Sutton, Surrey, SM1 2RF

• Wednesday 21 March at Bedzed Pavillion, Sandmartin Way,Hackbridge, Wallington, Surrey SM6 7DF

• Friday 23 March at The Vestry Hall, London Road, Mitcham, Surrey CR4 3UD

• Monday 26 March at Croydon Central Library, Katharine Street, London CR9 1ET

•Tuesday 27 March at Richard Mayo Hall, Kingston United Reformed Church, Eden Street, Kingston, KT1 1HZ

Victor Perez-Mares, communications manager for Viridor, said: "Since being appointed preferred bidder, we have been further developing our proposals to present them to the local community so that they can get a better understanding of our plans and provide us with their views to fully inform the development on our application.

"We have created an online hub to ensure transparent and easy access to information and to further encourage local residents to engage in the discussions about our proposals. We’re confident this will complement our written correspondence and face to face engagement programme to maximise the reach of our consultation work.

"We’d like to encourage the local community to join us at one of the local exhibition events and the online conversation throughout the consultation period which concludes in May, to discuss our proposals and contribute towards the development of our plans."

Once submitted, the London Borough of Sutton will carry out its own statutory consultation with interested parties and the local community before determining the submitted application, giving all interested parties another opportunity to have their say about the proposed development.
