An armed robber mistakenly shot his friend as they tried to steal fake Rolex watches, a court heard.

Daniel Tesfay, 26, shot Jonathan Barnes by mistake at an address in Morland Road, Croydon, last August.

Mr Tesfay is standing trial at the Old Bailey after pleading not guilty to murdering Mr Barnes and of possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

The Old Bailey heard Mr Tesfay and Mr Barnes had arranged to go to the address to view supposed Rolex watches which were for sale.

Unknown to the pair the watches were fake and worth little.

When they returned to the home of the seller, Jordaan Williams, Mr Barnes agreed to buy the watches for £6,500.

He then grabbed the Rolexes and a Blackberry mobile belonging to the seller's friend Emmanuel Akokhia and said "Let's do it."

Roger Smart prosecuting said: "Daniel Tesfay then produced a loaded semi-automatic pistol that he first threatened Jordaan Williams with and then Emmanuel Akokhia.

"The robbers tried to make good their escape with Daniel Tesfay ahead of Jonathan Barnes but Jordaan Williams prevented Jonathan barnes leaving by grabbing hold of him.

"Daniel Tesfay threatened him with the firearm before turning to leave.

"Jordaan Williams again grabbed hold of Jonathan Barnes and on this occasion Daniel Tesfay then shot at him but in fact missed Jordaan Williams and instead shot and killed his fellow robber Jonathan Barnes before running away from the scene, taking the pistol with him."

The trial continues.
