Two engineers from Croydon, one of them the designer of part of the 2012 Olympics Athletes’ Village, have been awarded membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Dan Faries and Katherine Woolley received ICE Membership, which is awarded to civil engineers who have achieved chartered status, the formal qualification for practising professional engineers.

Mr Faries is an engineer with Amey Consulting and lists designing elements of the London 2012 Olympic Athletes’ Village as a career highlight.

Miranda Housden, London Director of the Institution of Civil Engineers said: “Civil engineers work at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skill and professional expertise. Gaining chartered status is a significant personal achievement and we welcome Dan and Katherine into the ICE.”

Ms Woolley, a tunnel engineer with Mott MacDonald, is currently working on Crossrail’s Bond Street Station tunnels.

Her career has previously taken her to Iceland, where she worked on Europe’s largest hydro-power project. She promotes engineering across schools in London through her work as a STEMNET (promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in schools) Ambassador.

The qualification is considered a benchmark for high professional standards and expertise in civil engineering.
