A serial fly-tipper who used his waste disposal business to dump household rubbish twice in the same street has been fined more than £4,000.

Nuhur Mulindwa, 56, of Shrublands Avenue in Shirley, was seen discarding old bits of carpet in Bramble Close on May 15 last year.

On June 15 he was seen in the same street fly-tipping furniture, poles and wood.

He was found guilty of two counts of illegally dumping household waste at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on August 5.

He was ordered to pay £4,170 and serve 250 hours of community service when he was sentenced on Thursday.

At the time of the offences Mr Mulindwa was running a registered waste collection business called Enrichment Internations Ltd, which has since closed.

District Judge Kamlesh Kaur Rana said: “These are very serious offences which you committed deliberately and you committed for financial gain.”

Earlier in the week Graham Thomas, of Malden Avenue in South Norwood, was found guilty of three charges of failing to answer council requests for information at the same court.

He was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs.

The prosecutions were the 113th and 114th successful convictions in Croydon Council’s Don’t Mess with Croydon – Take Pride campaign.

Councillor Stuart Collins, deputy leader and cabinet member for clean and green Croydon, said: “I want to thank the witness who came forward to report Mr Mulindwa’s offences, as the public’s help is really key to us investigating fly-tippers.

“The judge’s strong sentence in this case reflects the damage that fly-tipping does to our borough, and hopefully this will make other offenders think twice in future.”

The campaign aims to encourage members of the public to report fly-tipping and discourage people from dumping waste.

Time-banded waste collection along London Road between West Croydon and Norbury has been introduced as part of the campaign, restricting the hours that shopkeepers are allowed to leave their business rubbish out for collection.
