More than 30 firefighters battled a fire at an abandoned office block in Addiscombe this morning.
Six fire engines were sent to the six-storey building in Morland Road at about 6am.
A pile of rubbish had been set alight inside the block, causing flames and smoke to spread through the building, a firefighter said.
Crews in breathing apparatus spent more than two hours battling the flames, the firefighter said, adding: "We had the challenge to make sure the building was safe."
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said fire crews from Woodside, Croydon, Norbury and Beckenham fire stations attended the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by London Fire Brigade’s officers and the police.
