A hammer attacker who brutally assaulted two women has been jailed for six years.

Aminul Islam, 29, of South Norwood, viciously clubbed his victims with a hammer in Portland Road, near the junction with Doyle Road, on March 1. 

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but later pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm.

His two victims, who were both in their 20s and knew him, were treated for head and hand injuries following the attack at about 6.10pm.

Islam, of Portland Road, was jailed at Croydon Crown Court on Wednesday.

Detective Constable Selwyn Hector, of Croydon police's community safety unit, said: "I am pleased with the result of this case and that the perpetrator of such a violent attack has been sentenced to a considerable amount of time behind bars."
