The body of a man was found in a Thornton Heath road this afternoon.

Police were called to Grange Park Road at 3.17pm.

On arrival they found an unresponsive man, aged in his 30s.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness reported seeing police officers surrounding the body in the road and two ambulances parked nearby.

Colin Hillman was driving past when he noticed police cars blocking the road.

He said: "I saw ambulances in the road and police officers surrounding the body.

"I didn't expect that, I expected a car accident or something. I had to look a couple of times to check it was real."

A post-mortem examination is to follow in due course but formal identification has not yet taken place, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious.
