A woman in her 50s remains in a serious condition in hospital 10 days after a head-on collision in which a mother and son died.

Nicola Morris, 29, and her son Kai Arnold, 11, died in a car crash on a bend in Banstead Road, Ewell, on Saturday, July 5.

This afternoon police said that a girl, a man his 30s and man in his 60s, all injured in the accident, have all been discharged from hospitals since Thursday.

Although there is no suggestion that this accident was caused by speeding, drivers and neighbours have stepped-up their pleas for the road to be made safer.

Epsom and Ewell MP Chris Grayling said residents had told him that "something must be done" to stop drivers from going too fast down the road.

Mr Grayling said: "The most important thing first of all is there is a proper investigation into the accident.

"When we know more about what caused it, there’s a clear logic to make sure the cause is addressed and sensible safety measures taken."

He said possible traffic calming measures could include speed cameras, radar speed signs or a mini-roundabout at the nearby leisure centre.

Mr Grayling said: "I went down to look at the location to see where it happened and what the road situation around it was. It’s in an area with a blind hump on a bend."

In response to the fatal crash, he said: "It’s all very moving and terrible. Hearts go out to everybody involved."

Linda Lewis, who has lived in Banstead Road for 18 years, said there have been about five serious crashes on the stretch since she moved there.

County Councillor John Beckett, who represents Ewell division, said he had requested information on accidents along the stretch of road from council officers.

Coun Beckett said: "It’s very unfortunate and my sympathy goes out to the families concerned. We haven’t yet got an answer on what was the cause of the accident.

"It’s hard to come up with a solution until we fully understand what actually caused the accident and what necessary action needs to be taken."

Driver Lindsey Addison, who find it too stressful to drive down the road any more, said: "It is awful. Cars constantly flash their lights or drive so close to my car because I stick to the speed limit 30.

"The speed bumps have done nothing at all to slow cars down and cars overtake all the time. Something has to be done or more people will be tragically killed."

Another driver Jan Pencherz asked whether signs or a speed camera could be introduced in order to slow cars down.

Mrs Pencherz said: "I drive to work every day along this road and am fed up with people driving dangerously close to me because I choose to obey the 30mph speed limit.

"Coming from Banstead as soon as you get past the speed humps there are no reminders that the road is 30mph.

"When I first started to use this road, three years ago, I was unclear as to the speed limit. I have witnessed people overtaking on this road, at a frightening speed."

Councillor Clive Woodbridge, who represents Ewell on Epsom and Ewell Borough Council, said he was sure that police and responsible agencies would see if a reoccurrence could be prevented.

Coun Woodbridge said: "This was a tragic accident and in the wake of it, it would be very wrong if all possible ways to make the road safer were not investigated. "

He added: "It’s tragic and such a young loss of life. Our thoughts go out to the family."
