After what may be Merton’s most well-publicised community event in recent memory, a proud mum has thanked supporters who supported her son’s fundraising drive.

Jenny Baulkwill, of Graham Road, said her 15-year-old son Ben’s bike-marking event was a “terrific success”, raising £229 for the Protect Dundonald Rec campaign.

Merton’s education chief Councillor Peter Walker was sacked last month from his role as cabinet member for education after he was caught on camera ripping down posters publicising the event.

Coun Walker, who had been jogging through the park, insisted he should not have been sacked because the posters were illegally fly-posted.

But Merton Council leader Councillor Stephen Alambritis, called his conduct “wholly unacceptable”. Coun Alambritis said it was wrong of Coun Walker to selectively rip down posters put up by political opponents of the council.

The Protect Dundonald Rec campaign was launched last year in response to council plans to redevelop its pavilion as part of plans to expand Dundonald Primary School.

Mrs Baulkwill said: “There has been a great community spirit and we are even more determined to save our green space.

“Despite persistent rain, many friends and neighbours braved the elements to get their bikes serviced and enjoy our home-made cakes while children drew their favourite part of their rec.

“It certainly seems that more and more residents, especially after last week shameful events, want to become actively involved in helping those who are working so hard protect the Rec.”
