A promising young chef has secured a job at a world famous restaurant.

Ricky Bergin will work under his role model and Masterchef judge Michel Roux Jr at Le Gavroche in Mayfair.

The top London restaurant will take on the Carshalton College graduate this October after he applied for a Commis Chef position.

Bergin, 18, will head to west London later this year after impressing during a trial day.

The young apprentice said: "My inspiration came from my Granddad who owned his own restaurant in Portugal and got me interested in food after originally wanting to become a professional footballer.

"My advice to anyone interested in a career in catering is to stay focused, be flexible, learn as much as you can from the experts you work with and be willing to work weekends."

Ricky joined Carshalton College in April 2011, as part of the scheme developed between the College and the London Apprenticeship Company.

Ten apprentices joined the College, aged between 16 and 18 years, to develop their catering skills in a working environment as catering assistants.

Ricky will follow a long line of top chefs who have worked at Le Gavroche including Marco Pierre White and Gordon Ramsay.

Current chefs include Masterchef stars Monica Galetti and Rachel Humpreys.

Michel Roux Jr took over the rains at Le Gavroche from his father in 1991.

The current menu is a lighter, modern version of the classic French haute cuisine the resaurant is famed for, blending mediterranean and asian flavours.

Carshalton College's inhouse training restaurant, Nightingales, welcomes guests to their coffee mornings, lunches, fine dining and a variety of themed nights during the year.

Meals are prepared and served by the students under the supervision of experienced chefs and offers Full-Time, Part-Time and Apprenticeship courses.
