To celebrate the centenary of Benjamin Britten, youngsters came together for an afternoon sing-along.

More than 160 pupils from seven schools visited St George’s College, Weybridge, on Friday, November 22, to celebrate the birthday of the famous British composer.

The event repertoire included Friday Afternoons, a song cycle dedicated to the composer’s brother, who was headmaster at a school whose choir rehearsed on Friday afternoon each week.

Young singers began with warm-ups in the school chapel before groups rehearsed music to be performed later at a concert.

In the evening, all the groups came together to create a large choir and the audience even had the chance to join in with one of the songs.

John Mann, head of strings, said: “The children performed superbly, each group having an opportunity to take the spotlight and perform a song from Britten’s cycle on their own.

“At the end of the event, audience and performers alike left in high spirits, having gained much enjoyment from the experience.”
