Forget park and ride systems – it is all about park and stride for kids these days.
Families from All Saints Primary school, in Carshalton, are ditching the school run by car and are increasingly walking to school, or part of the way, in a bid to boost their health.
Many parents are parking their cars in Ashcombe Road and walking the final ten minutes to school as part of the ‘clean air for schools’ programme.
Headteacher Emma Hart Dyke said: “We are an expanding school and so it is important for us to ensure that we reduce congestion in our surrounding roads.
“Every new reception child has been given an individual travel plan which shows them the most sustainable ways to travel from their home to school.”
Jill Whitehead, chairperson of environment and neighbourhood committee, said: “We are committed to doing everything we can to reduce car use and increase the health and fitness of young people in Sutton”.
“That’s why we work with schools to overcome the barriers to safe, sustainable, independent and active travel for young people who attend school in the borough.”
