Plans are in place to build a new primary school in an area with a rapidly increasing birth rate.

Wandsworth Council have identified Atheldene Centre, in Garratt Lane, Earlsfield, as a potential site for a new primary school when it becomes vacant.

The centre, currently used by people with learning and physical disabilities, is relocating to a new site in Church Lane, Tooting, next year.

A new school could admit 60 pupils a year, eventually providing places for up to 420 children and nursery space for 50 toddlers.

In Earlsfield the number of babies born each year has grown from 225 in 2003 to 354 in 2011, a 57 per cent increase.

Additional pressure is also being generated by new housing developments.

Last week the council was successful in securing extra funding from the Department of Education to provide additional primary school places in the area.

A total of 90 places have been added to Beatrix Potter, Swaffield and Earlsfield primary schools, but projections show birth rate is set to increase.

It is believed more people are opting for state education instead of private, due to the economic downturn.

Councillor Kathy Tracey, the council's cabinet member for education, said: “We believe this site in Garratt Lane could be transformed into an excellent primary school and nursery for children in the area.

“It has very good transport links and is in a part of the borough that will soon need additional    reception places if we are to keep up with the growing demand from parents.

“It would also offer local parents more choice when it comes to selecting the type of school they want for their children.”

The council will run a consultation with parents and the community on the proposals.
