Adventurous pupils tried their hand at abseiling, rifle shooting and coasteering as part of a week-long training camp at RAF St Mawgan in Cornwall.

Year 8 boys from Merton Park's Rutlish School Combined Cadet Force (CCF) were put through their paces in a week of outdoor adventure training culminating in a 24-hour exercise where they slept out overnight in tarpaulin shelters called Bashas, followed by a surf session at nearby Newquay.

Rutlish CCF was first formed in 1921 and comprises two service sections - The Army and the RAF.

It is now a thriving part of Rutlish School life and meets every Wednesday during term time with pupils able to enjoy a variety of camps and training trips throughout the year.

Squadron Leader Robert Penny, who accompanied the cadets to Cornwall, said: "It was a great week and the weather was absolutely fantastic which added to the enjoyment.

"All the boys acquitted themselves brilliantly in all the activities on offer.

"They did themselves, their families and the Rutlish CCF proud."
