Following the launch of our Supporting Streatham High Road campaign, we had a deluge of messages to suggest how council chiefs should regenerate the area.

Lots of you proposed a pedestrianised quarter with small independent shops, and a better selection of retailers, to encourage people to shop locally.

Improved security for traders and a renovation of shop fronts in keeping with the High Road’s art deco architecture were also suggested to make it more attractive to outsiders.

Others said transport bosses needed to commit to a complete overhaul of Streatham station, including disabled access, and build a flyover or tunnel on the A23 from Norbury to Brixton and replace the existing road with grass.

More imaginative ideas included the creation of an online currency for High Road shops similar to the Brixton Pound, a town centre loyalty card and functional, yet artistic, street furniture such as lampposts and benches.

Members of Streatham Action held a meeting last week to discuss plans to create a parish council, which would have the power to make certain decisions about the town centre’s development.

Vice-chairman Lee Alley said the group hoped to model its plans on a similar system in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham in west London.

He said: “A lot of cool stuff could be done. We would be able to decide which roads need paving and which roads don’t.

“We could also campaign for better playgrounds and improved wildlife preservation.

“We want to develop Streatham – we have been ignored for so long.” Politicians, including Streatham MP Chuka Umunna and London Assembly member Val Shawcross, have pledged their support for our campaign.

The owners of I Love Coffee have promised to host a meeting for business owners, with details to be announced soon.

We plan to pass all your ideas to those in charge of developing the area at Lambeth Council.

Some of your ideas for supporting Streatham High Road:

Josh Edwards (@joshed88): Look at @hideawaylive for a local business investing in your high street. Be proud of it to change perceptions.

Jonathan Bartley, member of the Streatham Green Party: “You could make Streatham station fully accessible for those with mobility impairments – this could be done relatively cheaply.”

Resident Anna Nolan said: “I have always dreamed of a town square with cafes on the Kwik Fit site, and a pedestrianised road with art and craft shops and cafes in Gleneldon Mews behind the High Road.”

Cynical in SW16 (@diddlysqauat29): The High Road needs a public space. The Streatham masterplan identifies Kwik Fit. Let’s knock it down. We need a proper town square in central Streatham.

Streatham Soul (@StreathamSoul): Wash all the shop fronts and paint with dirt-repelling paint to combat pollution dirt.
