An HIV-positive man described as "the life and soul of the party" was found dead in his flat by his ex lover, a inquest.

Ian Doyle, of Arragon Road, Wandsworth, was found face down on the bathroom floor by Geoffrey Newby on August 10 this year.

He had been due to fly to Munich four days earlier and concerned friends in Germany emailed Mr Newby when he did not arrive.

Mr Doyle, 55, was taking three types of medication for his condition but also suffered from anaemia and coronary heart disease.

The inquest heard he suffered had serious depression resulting from a recent break up and his father’s diagnosis with Alzheimers.

PC Richard Smith, who attended the scene, found two empty packs of medication, which had been prescribed just 10 days earlier, leading to suspicions of an overdose.

But Dr Michael Heath, a pathologist said although ketamine, which is a tranquilliser, ecstasy and high levels of alcohol were found in his blood, the decomposed state of the body made it impossible to determine whether an overdose had occurred.

In his summary, assistant deputy coroner Russell Caller, sitting at Westminster Coroner's Court on Friday, gave an open verdict with an "unascertained" cause of death.

Mr Caller said that he could not give a cause of death "that would be beyond reasonable doubt".
