Surrey was among the worst performing areas in England for delivering the NHS Health Check, according to a new report from Diabetes UK.

The new report, Let’s Get it Right, highlighted that during 2011-12, just 1 per cent of those eligible in the area were offered the checks, which test people aged 40 to 74 for risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and kidney failure.

The average across England was 13.9 per cent and the poor performance continued into the new financial year, with just 0.1 per cent of people being checked between April and June 2012.

Diabetes UK warned that the poor implementation of the NHS Health Check meant people in Surrey at high risk of type 2 diabetes were missing out on information and support.

Jill Steaton, regional manager for Diabetes UK south-east said: “The failure to properly implement the NHS Health Check in Surrey has potentially dire consequences.

“It means that people at high risk of type 2 diabetes are missing out the information and support to make the lifestyle changes that can help prevent it.

“It is also vital that people with the condition are diagnosed as early as possible to reduce their risk of complications and those people in Surrey who missed being diagnosed last year are at increased risk of amputation, blindness, kidney failure and stroke.”

Diabetes UK is urging people aged 40 to 74 who have not had an NHS Health Check to contact their GP to ask for one.
