The body found on a street in East Sheen could have fallen from a British Airways (BA) plane, a councillor has said.

The body of the man, who has still not been identified but is thought to be Angolan, landed in Portman Avenue early on Sunday, September 9.

Councillor Stephen Speak said: “The African man found in Portman Avenue on Sunday had Angolan currency on him. A quick check will show that British Airways BA76 registration G-YMML arriving from Angola flew overhead just a few minutes beforehand.

“The chances are that the two are related and is suggestive of a security lapse at Luanda airport that I hope BA is currently investigating.”

The Metropolitan Police are making inquiries to find out the identity of the man and refused to confirm he fell from a BA aircraft.

A Met spokesman said: “The origin of the flight and airline is not known and inquiries are ongoing.”

It is still unknown what will happen to the man’s body. A postmortem examination held at Kingston Hospital mortuary on September 11 concluded the death was caused by multiple injuries.

A Met spokesman said: “It is very difficult to say what will happen to the body because he still hasn’t been identified. It is very difficult to do anything until that progresses.”

A BA spokesman said: “It has not been confirmed that this incident involved a British Airways aircraft.”
