Streatham Redskins eased through to the next round of the South East Trophy thanks to a thumping 19-4 win over Slough Jets.

However, due to the comfortable nature of the win, head coach Barry Spours says it is not the best way to prepare for this weekend’s difficult double header against Cardiff Devils and Chelmsford Chieftains.

He said: “A result like that can have a double effect on the team. It’s great for the attackers to get the puck in the net three or four times.

“However, there is the risk the players become complacent and over confident.

“We need to make sure we continue the good form into the Cardiff match.
“We’ll be throwing everything into that game because we need the points against teams like Cardiff.”

He said: “Chelmsford are among the favourites for the league, and it will be a very difficult ask for us to go there and get a result.”

Top of the scorers against  Slough, who were relegated from the English Ice Hockey Association National League last year, was Jakub Klima with five goals.

Spours said: “We rested a number of players against Slough and, in hindsight, we could have rested some more.”

Match report by David Carr

Streatham Redskins enjoyed a thumping 19-4 win over Slough NIHL Jets at Brixton ice rink on Saturday.

The two teams battled against relegation last season with the Redskins narrowly condemning the Berkshire side to the drop. However, the gulf between the teams was very apparent.

It took just 40 seconds for Streatham to open the scoring with Czech import Jakub Klima finishing a pass from Adam Mahoney. Slough composed themselves but when Klima hit his and Streatham’s second goal it opened the floodgates.

Former Jet Jamie McIlroy fired home against his old club to make it three nil after Chris Rasmussen had worked hard around the net and then Klima completed his hat-trick just two minutes later.

Further goals from Mahoney, Joe Allen and Chris Rasmussen gave Streatham a 7-0 lead at the end of the first leaving home fans delighted.

The second period saw the visitors pull an early goal back as Jamie Milton was left unmarked up high and he skated through before firing the puck under Redskins goalie Stefan Nubert, making his first start of the year.

Eight minutes into the period, Streatham found their groove again hitting an incredible four goals in the space of two minutes.

Casimir Madren Britton fired home a long range bullet from the blue line past Saunders in the Slough goal to get the home crowd cheering again, and then further goals from Klima, McIlroy and Rupe Quiney left the Slough defence in a spin.

Dan Botting hit his first goal of the season on the powerplay to make it 12-1 and then Evander Grinnell also scored. Streatham’s Mahoney and Slough’s Scott Cooper dropped the gloves to give further talking points to the game.

Young goalie Sam Bolwell replace Nubert at the start of the third period and she was in action straight away as Tom Henley was left wide open by the Skins defence and slotted the puck into the corner of the goal.

Streatham scored almost immediately through Grinnell and then Slough got their third of the night through Daniel Rose.

Streatham continued to light the lamp as further goals from Liam Rasmussen, Dom Hopkins, Jakub Klima, Eddie Temple and Perry Richardson were only interrupted by another Slough goal scored by Nathan Darmanin.
