Nike’s sporting clubhouse on Clapham Common has been refused planning permission to extend its stay until May.

The decision by Wandsworth Council last week followed claims by residents and community groups of excessive commercial activity on the common.

The Nike+ FuelStation, which opened in July and lets people try on trainers and design footwear on terminals, must be removed by the end of the month.

Wandsworth Council said an extended stay would “unacceptably” harm the character and appearance of the common.

The Friends of Clapham Common (FCC), who said the structure had no place on common land, were delighted by the decision.

Melanie Oxley, chairman of FCC, said: “Wandsworth has taken on board that the common is a public space and should remain so.”

Lambeth Council said it would receive £136,100 for the Nike structure for its initial stay without the extension – the sum included deposits to repair damage and money to reinvest into the common.

Nike did not respond to questions when contacted.
