A mass towpath trundle saw more than 500 people walk along the riverside to raise money for Princess Alice Hospice.

The annual event on Sunday, May 20, was officially started by mayor of Elmbridge Councillor Janet Turner.

Leading the 20th towpath trundle was 88-year-old Ron Higginson who has completed the eight-mile course every year since it began.

He first took part to thank the hospice for its care and support of his wife.

Each year participants on the walk get a commemorative mug, and Mr Higginson has built up a sizeable collection.

He took time at the end of his most recent walk to enjoy a cup of tea from his latest mug.

He said: “The care Princess Alice Hospice gave to my wife was amazing. Even after two decades I am still very grateful for everything they did for us; that is why I continue to support this wonderful charity.”

Walking in his debut towpath trundle was six-year-old Thomas Weddell from Hersham who passes the hospice every day on his way to Cranmere Primary School in Esher and often asks about the hospice and the work it does. For the first time this year, there is a special prize available for the top fundraiser under 16 and Thomas is determined to win.

He has already reached £380. Visit justgiving.com/ThomasWeddell to boost his total.
