£14m is set to be invested over the next two years upgrading and repairing the borough’s roads.

Croydon Council will invest in repairing roads and pavements after consecutive winters of snow and ice caused damage to road surfaces creating a backlog of maintenance work.

The council will invest £7m this year, with an additional £862,000 grant coming from Transport for London this year, and a further £7m the following year to complete a £36.5m investment programme set in 2010.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: "This programme of top-quality highways maintenance illustrates the council’s commitment to regeneration of the borough, and to giving our residents a clean, safe and green environment in which to live and raise their children.

"These commitments have already commenced with the work we’ve undertaken in district centres – such as Purley, which was completed earlier this year, and Addiscombe, due for completion this summer – giving them a more welcoming atmosphere and improving conditions for residents and traders alike.

"The importance of keeping the borough’s highways network in tip-top order can’t be overstated – we have to keep motorists on the move and this maintenance programme marks a step change in approach that will deliver improved value for money."
