Teddington’s Tim Brabants goes to this weekend’s World Cup sprint canoe regatta in Germany needing to beat rival Paul Wycherley to stay in the hunt to defend his K1 1,000m Olympic title at the 2012 Games.
Beijing gold medallist Brabants finished fourth in his semi-final on Friday at the opening World Cup of the summer in Poland, but took some consolation as Wycherley came last in Saturday’s final.
The pair go head-to-head for the one Team GB K1 1,000m spot for the London Games and know whoever performs best in Germany is likely to get the Olympic nod.
Hampton Hill’s Jon Boyton and Elmbridge Canoe Club’s Ed Rutherford, meanwhile, failed in their attempt to land a K2 1,000m spot for the Olympics.
The pair needed to win the European Olympic qualifier in Poland last week to book Team GB a spot for the London Games, but they failed to make the final.
