A man who is believed to have fallen from a fourth-floor window at Surbiton YMCA this morning has died.

Police had taped the bottom end of Victoria Road off after reports a man had fallen shortly after 10am this morning.

A spokeswoman for London Ambulance said they sent a bicycle, an ambulance and an air ambulance doctor in a car to the man, who they said was in his 50s.

She said: "Attempts were made to resuscitate the patient but he was pronounced dead by the doctor of the air ambulance."

Before they knew he had died, shopkeepers reacted to the incident.

A shop keeper in Surbiton Arts and Stationery, in Victoria Road, said: “It was shocking and it gives you the chills. You know it’s the YMCA and it has got all these different kinds of people but they are generally all quite nice so I am shocked at what’s happened.”

Elite Houseware employee Kambey Bhuyan, 45, said: “This is not normal for the area but it is shocking.”

A spokesman for YMCA London South West said: "[We] are deeply saddened by this morning’s events and are working closely with the police to assist their investigations but would like to thank the emergency services and our staff on site for their quick response.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the resident’s family and friends.
