Three men have been jailed for more than 16 years for carrying out a cash in transit robbery in Southwark.

Daniel Collins, 28, Baffour Amponsah, 25, and Brian Ocaya, 28, were jailed at the Old Bailey on May 22.

Collins of Clifton Road, South Norwood, was jailed for six years, and Ocaya of Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, was jailed for six years and ten months.

Amponsah, of Reigate Road, Bromley, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing and was jailed for four years and two months.

All three were guilty of robbery.

The court heard on January 16, a G4S worker was delivering cash to a Lloyds TSB bank in Southwark Park Road, when he was approached from behind by a suspect who pushed him, knocking him off balance.

The suspect then grabbed the cash box and ran off towards Ambrose Street.

Less than an hour later a witness noticed five men, including Collins, Amponsah and Ocaya get out of a white transit van in a nearby car park.

Ocaya was then seen to take the cash box from the back of the van and place it on the floor.

The jury heard the men forced open the box which activated the glue and dye contained within it, rendering the money inside worthless.

As the men tried to access the money, plain-clothes police officers approached the men and they attempted to escape.

Amponsah and Ocaya were both detained and arrested at the scene, and were charged with robbery on June 16, 2011.

Collins was arrested at home on November 11, 2011, following an investigation by detectives. He was interviewed and bailed, but was charged with robbery 11 days later.

Detective Superintendent Nick Stevens, from the Flying Squad, said: "This is a fantastic result.

"The conviction should assist in deterring other criminals who think committing cash in transit robberies are a quick and easy way to get cash."
