The deadline for jubilee street parties could be extended after the royal borough’s party count was found to be lagging behind its neighbours.

In celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, Kingston currently has 48 approved street parties set to take place over the upcoming bank holiday weekend in June.

In contrast neighbouring borough Wandsworth has a whopping 227 approved street parties, Richmond has 211, Sutton has 110 and Merton has 62.

Royal British Legion member and ex army serviceman Ron Morris, 85, said: "I am lost for words and I am surprised Kingston will be having so few street parties being a royal borough.

"I think lots of people will be heading to central London for the bigger events but anything Kingston puts on is always done very well."

Residents preparing for a street party in Beaconsfield Road, Surbiton have managed to confirm more than 140 attendees on the day and cannot wait for the big day.

Organising member Saffron Dicks, 43, said: "We are really excited to be getting the whole community together for a big party.

"There will be a fancy dress and jubilee hat competition, an egg and spoon race and street art with chalk. We will also donate any funds we have left to a local charity - fingers crossed it all goes well."

Kingston’s four-day long street party fest will begin on Saturday, June 2 with 11 parties taking place. Bank holiday Monday will host the most number of parties in the borough at 16.

A spokesperson from Kingston Council said: "Kingston Council are very pleased that many communities and neighbours from across the whole borough are organising their own street parties to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

"For the smallest London borough, fifty street parties is a significant number and although the application date has passed we would be happy to consider any late applications."
