An Ashtead councillor died suddenly last week from a heart attack, just days after stepping down to spend more time with his family.
David Howell, 63, represented Ashtead Common on Mole Valley district council for eight years until two weeks ago when he stood down at the local elections.
He was first elected to the council in May 2004 as an independent member for Ashtead Common. He became leader of the informal Independent Group on the council in 2006 and deputy leader of the council and portfolio holder for communities and assets.
An engineer by trade, for many years he was a governor of St Giles School in Ashtead where the new classrooms and major refurbishment of 2004/5 are a testament to his energy. He was also a trustee of the Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall.
Simon Ling, who replaced Coun Howell as leader of the Independents at the weekend, said: "David was a highly respected and valued member of the council and he had served Ashtead well for many years.
"My colleagues and I are all deeply shocked and saddened by his sudden death and we shall miss his wise advice."
Mr Howell, who died on May 8, is survived by his wife Sue, daughters Helen and Katherine, son Michael and five grandchildren. His funeral service will be held at St George’s Church, Ashtead, on Friday May, 25, at 11am.
Leave a tribute for Mr Howell below.
